Peter and Anna Vavasour planted the first vines in the Awatere River Wine Company district in and established the region's first winery. Winemaking at Awatere River is a balance of head and heart; science has an important role to play, but numbers alone do not make good wine - that really comes down to artistry.

We believe the less handling the better, and we like to allow the wine to develop with little or no finings - an opportunity that is only presented when the wine itself is of a very high standard. We believe you can see and taste the expression of this philosophy in every glass of Awatere River wine. We have an area of land earmarked by Peter and Louis Vavasour Awatere River Wine Company is soon to be planted, and which has the potential to raise the bench mark for Pinot Noir in New Zealand.

It was on this country that the Vavasour family settled inpioneering commercial grape-growing and winemaking. Be the first to review this item! Rate this Winery. Make a Tasting Reservation. Sign Up for our Newsletter. Sign Up.
